Less is More When Crafting A Hotel-Style Haven

I used to have a credit card that earned mini vacations at the Ritz-Carlton. So I earned the points and in those years I would savor 48 hours in a luxury room overlooking the ocean.

To this day I can feel the sand beneath my feet, taste the salt air, see dolphins cavorting in the waves, and feel the breeze. We would savor meals on a terrace surrounded by hibiscus and palm trees.

Nothing to do but be, eat, sleep, walk, explore the beach, read, relax at the pool. And there was another instance of "Nothing"...practically nothing in the room, just comfortable essentials.

Then that credit card stopped offering this reward and the amazing hotel stays came to an end.

A few months ago I realized I could shift our spare room from being a keeper of stuff into a truly restful retreat.

First I needed to get clear on these 2 questions:

  • How did I want to feel when in this space?

Like I feel when I imagine being on this beach: my troubles melt to nothing and all I need to do is breathe, relax, just be.

  • What are all of the intentions for the use of this space?

Our place to sleep when we crave a time-out, vacation, or special treatment.

Keeping this space off-limits and clutter-free the rest of the time is a gift to ourselves. It's a game of sorts, can we follow through?

Here is the clear and prep part of the plan:

  1. Remove all items from the entire space including the bathroom and closet.
  2. Clean everywhere.
  3. Paint the room and bathroom Camping Tent (a taupe)
  4. Paint the closet Window Pane (an aqua).

5. Seriously go through all of the items that were stored in there. It was with huge relief that we emptied the 2 big chrome shelf units of old paint cans, holiday decor, clothes, towels, and pillows. The shelf units were relocated to the dining room.

6. The old dresser was donated. It hadn’t been used for a long time yet we never considered a room with a bed and no dresser. Once it was gone the room had a new spaciousness.

7. All of our clothing was reconsidered and what remained now did fit in our regular closets.

The final part of the plan was to set up the luxury essential items while staying aligned with the intentional feeling.

--------------------------------------------------------------
Our choices included:
1) The Wink Bed Luxury Firm Hybrid mattress.

2) The all-linen CasaLuna sheet set and Threshold coverlet from Target.

3) I love these fish posters by Charting Nature and framed them myself. Target has beautiful pre-matted wood frames.

Just playing around with the closet now that it feels like a little surprise - talk about a fabulous feeling! It went from overstuffed to emptied, cleaned, freshly painted, and now home to these fish.  There's more out on the lanai - I can't stop!
Please know that I have an affiliate link for the fish posters and other lovely products from Charting Nature. Plus here's a coupon code: AMAZINGFISH

This little bathroom has personality.
The mirror is from Kohl's, and the shelves and ceramic garden stools were Target finds.
It's fun when things go better than planned.

Thank you for visiting and checking out what I've been up to. I hope this sparks some ideas that you enjoy.

All the Best - Margit
